Drivers in Manitoba may soon be sharing the road with the Tesla Semi, as Canadian trucking and logistics company Bison Transport has announced it has started testing the class 8 electric truck.
The Winnipeg-based carrier has confirmed last week it is currently testing the Tesla Semi with its drivers in the Chicago area. The trial remains in its early stages, but Bison says initial feedback from drivers has been positive.
Rather than immediately committing to a larger deployment, Bison appears to be using the trial to get a better understanding of how the electric Class 8 truck could fit into its operations. A key part of the testing program is giving its drivers hands-on experience with the Semi while collecting feedback on how it performs under real-world trucking conditions.
There are still plenty of details Bison did not reveal. The company did not say how many Tesla Semis are involved in the trial, or where in Canada the trucks might be deployed.
Founded in 1969, Bison Transport operates throughout Canada and the United States, giving it a broad range of routes and operating conditions against which an electric Class 8 truck could eventually be tested against.
Tesla is preparing to significantly increase Semi production at its dedicated factory near Giga Nevada this year. While the facility has been open since earlier this year, the company is hosting an official inauguration party next month.
