Driving range is still a concern for some EV shoppers. However, a real-world test by Edmunds shows switching to electric does not need to scare drivers. The media outlet has confirmed that the Tesla Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) in the U.S. can go nearly 400 miles (643 km) between charges.
Edmunds tested the (Premium) 2026 RWD Model 3 and came away praising the EV’s efficiency. They note that it is the most efficient among the mass-produced battery-powered cars that they have tested.
While Tesla advertised the 2026 RWD Model 3 with 363 miles (584 km) of range, the test car actually traveled 30 miles (48 km) farther, or 8.3 percent above the official figure. Similarly, according to the EPA, the Model 3 consumes 25 kWh per 100 miles, suggesting drivers can expect 4 miles per kWh. However, Edmunds reported an energy consumption of 21.7 kWh per 100 miles, meaning their test car delivered 4.61 miles per kWh.
Edmunds also reported that the Model 3 charged met its charging expectations. They observed that the EV reached a peak of 246 kW, just slightly lower than the advertised 250 kW. This, however, is not expected to make a huge difference in owners’ everyday charging experience as the car added 100 miles (160 km) of driving range in just 12 minutes and 3 seconds.
In comparison, the 2026 RWD Model 3 outperformed the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA, which lasted 385 miles (620 km) before running the battery down. It also compared with the 2026 Audi A6 Sportback E-tron Prestige, which lasted 392 miles (630 km) in Edmunds’ test, despite being larger. However, the Tesla was outclassed by the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+, which was able to drive 434 miles (698 km).
The Premium RWD 2026 Tesla Model 3 currently starts at $42,490 in the US. However, this variant is produced at Tesla’s Fremont factory in the U.S., whereas in Canada, Tesla has started importing the sedan from China with a different battery chemistry. It has a range of 570 km (354 miles) and starts at C$49,990.
