Police department in Westchester, New York becomes first with Tesla Model Y patrol car

The Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department in Westchester, New York has become the first to add a Tesla Model Y to its fleet of patrol cars.

The Long Range Midnight Silver Metallic Model Y on 19″ Gemini wheels was delivered to the police department this month. Fleet Auto Supply in West Haven, Connecticut quickly equipped the electric SUV with state of the art Whelen CenCom Core Lighting Technology.

According to Hastings-on-Hudson Police Chief David Dosin, the Model Y was added to their fleet as the department looks to alternative fuel and green technology, reports Daily Voice.

Both the Model 3 and Model S have successfully been used as police cruisers in various states across the US, saving thousands of dollars in fuel and maintenance. Now the Model Y is quickly catching on as the best option as it offers more utility than the Model 3, but isn’t as expensive as the Model S.

The Spokane Police Department recently ordered four Model Y’s to add to their fleet, and the City of Eden Prairie in Minnesota also recently received approval to purchase the electric SUV. In a statement to Drive Tesla, the Eden Prairie PD said they hope to have the Model Y on the road by February next year.

So far no Canadian police departments have added a Tesla, but the small municipality of Oak Bay may become the first next year.
