Tesla’s new Shanghai Megafactory is gearing up for full-scale production. Tesla will hold a commissioning ceremony for their first energy storage plant outside the United States on February 11, 2025, according to a report from Shanghai Security News.
Construction of the Shanghai Megafactory began in May 2024 and much like the construction of Giga Shanghai, was completed in record time. Just seven months after the first shovels hit the ground, the factory was completed and trial production began in January.
The factory is located adjacent to Giga Shanghai, in the Lingang district of Pudong, and covers approximately  2,100,000 square feet and represents a significant investment of ¥1.45 billion (C$290/US$200 million). The Megafactory is dedicated exclusively to manufacturing Megapacks, Tesla’s large-scale commercial energy storage solution.

The factory is expected to ramp up production capacity throughout the first quarter of 2025, with an annual production goal of 10,000 Megapacks, equivalent to nearly 40 GWh of energy storage, matching the output of Tesla’s Megafactory in Lathrop, California.
Each Megapack can store over 3 MWh of energy, enough to power approximately 3,600 homes for an hour. In total, the Shanghai facility’s output could provide sufficient storage to power 50,000 homes in Shanghai for an entire year.
Tesla has already secured its first major customer for the Shanghai Megafactory. The Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group placed an initial order for Megapacks at the groundbreaking ceremony in May 2024.
