Tesla updates Model Y Tow Package specifications after confusing debut [Update]

Last week Tesla officially added the Model Y Tow Package to the online shop, three months after it was first announced.

There was one strange bit of information included on the product page, and that was if you had the 20″ Induction wheels on your Model Y, your tow rating was limited to 2,300lbs, a significant drop from the original 3,500lbs rating.

This was the first time Tesla had mentioned a different tow rating, and the manual also made no reference to different tow ratings.

There was some speculation it was because of different tire sizes and load ratings, but those explanation never fully made sense.

Now it appears Tesla has done a ‘mea culpa’, as the specifications have now been updated on the product page, saying that all wheel configurations can tow up to the rated 3,500lbs.

Tesla updated tow package

Here’s the original product description:

Equip your Model Y with a high-strength steel tow bar and 2” hitch receiver capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds on 19” and 21” wheels or up to 2,300 pounds on 20” wheels. Tow Mode actively monitors trailer sway and adjusts wheel braking and speed.

And this is the updated product description:

Equip your Model Y with a high-strength steel tow bar and 2” hitch receiver capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds on all wheel configurations.

This is definitely good news for current and future owners with the Induction wheels, and will likely lead to some order changes now that we know all configurations can tow up to the max rating.

The Model Y tow package is still expensive at $1,650 CAD ($1,200 USD), which includes installation at your nearest Service Center. There are aftermarket options that can be purchased for much less, and if you’re handy enough, you can install yourself.

Update: It looks like Tesla still needs to update the online owner’s manual, as it is still showing the different tow rating based on wheel configuration, as seen in this photo shared with us by a Drive Tesla reader.
