You can now buy the tow package for the Tesla Model Y after delivery

When Tesla first released the Model Y, it surprisingly came without a tow hitch, a feature many expected it to come with based on numerous sighting of the tow hitch on prototypes during testing on public roads.

Less than a month later though, Tesla added the tow hitch to its Design Studio for an additional $1,300 CAD. The catch was it could only be added to orders that had not beed delivered.

For Canadians, that was everyone, because deliveries only started earlier this month. The problem was Tesla had since raised the price of the Model Y in Canada, so if you added the hitch, you also had to pay the new, higher price for the vehicle.

Now Tesla has finally added the Model Y Tow Package to its online shop for post-delivery purchase and install.

The tow package will cost $1,650 CAD ($1,200 USD), which includes installation at your preferred Tesla Service Center. That’s a $350 premium compared to adding it before purchase.

The package also includes an upgrade to the software to include tTow Mode, which can monitor trailer sway and adjust wheel braking and speed automatically.

Interestingly, the product page lists the tow rating as 3,500lbs when equipped with 19″ or 21″ wheels. That rating drops considerably to 2,300lbs when using 20″ wheels.

If you want a detailed look at the tow hitch, you can check out our article from earlier this week which gives you an up-close look at it.
