FAA may fine SpaceX over missing data ahead of an August launch

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) proposes imposing a $175,000 fine against SpaceX for failure to submit required data before a launch.

In a notice to SpaceX, the FAA noted SpaceX failed to submit the required data to the agency at least seven days before the launch.

The missing data assesses the probability of the launch vehicle colliding with space debris tracked by the FAA.

The FAA notice did not specify the exact launch that SpaceX failed to file the data. However, it was one of the August 2021 launches.

This is not the first time SpaceX and the FAA have been at odds. In 2021, SpaceX was denied a waiver to launch a Starship prototype. However, SpaceX went forward with the launch anyway. After a short public exchange of tweets, SpaceX made specific changes at Boca Chica and was awarded additional launch licences from the FAA.

SpaceX is still waiting for the green light and a launch licence for the first orbital flight of Starship. The FAA has not indicated when or if the licence will come.

SpaceX has 30 days to respond to the notice, and as of yet, SpaceX has not commented on the alleged violation.
