Starlink services came to Canada’s Arctic back in October, and the reviews are mostly positive. Although there were some minor issues with connections and speeds when it first arrived, services are improving over time.
Per Arctic Today, most users see a connection of around 15 Mbps but sometimes reach speeds up to 120 Mbps.
This is lightning fast compared to the other competitors in the area, including Northwestel.
Northwestel, for its sake, offers:
- 5 Mbps and a 90 GB data cap for $60 or;
- 15 Mbps and a 200 GB data cap for $110
In comparison, Starlink charges $140 per month for up to 200 Mbps and will be instituting a one TB data cap in February.
Although there have been some issues, the service has stayed up during blizzards which have impressed residents. The only issue since Starlink came to the region is that SpaceX is very slow to respond to customer issues. Some people have had to wait days or weeks to get a response from the company. However, the service has dramatically improved connectivity to the region
Many are curious about how the service will deal with Spring weather, but by all reports, people are hopeful that the North finally has access to fast and reliable internet via Starlink.
