City of Burnaby expands EV charging infrastructure

The third-largest city in British Columbia has just expanded their network of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, bringing six new locations online this week.

The City of Burnaby has a plan to be carbon neutral by 2050 (that’s a long ways away…), and Mayor Mike Hurley believes this is a step in the right direction towards achieving that goal.

Burnaby residents have told us they want more charging capacity in our city.We will continue to add more EV stalls as quickly as we can as we look to become a carbon-neutral city by 2050.

At those six new locations, a total of 14 new ChargePoint charging stalls were added, with all of them being paid charging stations. The cost to charge your EV will be $2 per hour from 6am to 10pm, and $1 per hour between 10pm and 6am.

To encourage turnover and avoid EV’s sitting idle at the chargers, there will be a 4 hour time limit that will be monitored by city staff.

This is a common trend for public EV chargers. Other BC municipalities are also implementing charging fees to combat “idle time”, like Richmond and Powell River.

The new charging stations are at the following locations:

  • Edmonds Community Centre – 4 stalls
  • McGill Library – 2 stalls
  • Bill Copeland Sports Centre – 2 stalls
  • Central Park tennis courts – 2 stalls
  • Riverway Golf Course – 2 stalls
