One of the big perks of owning a Tesla vehicle is that it gets better over time through free over-the-air (OTA) software updates. In the last year we’ve seen big power increases delivered OTA, as well as a number of new safety features.
For one reason or another, some owners decide not to update their vehicles to the latest software version, opting to remain on older version. For some its because they have hacked/rooted (aka jailbreak) their car, allowing them to access features that otherwise wouldn’t be available to them, like rear heated seats on the SR+ or SR Model 3’s.
It appears the end may be near for those hackers (until they hack it again), and others on older software versions. Tesla recently sent out a notification to vehicles on older software versions about an impending cut-off from various services if they don’t update to at least 2019.40.2.3 by May 1st, 2020 due to network enhancements for security purposes.
If the affected vehicles don’t update by that date, they could get cut from future software updates, lose access to the Tesla Mobile App, no longer be able to access voice commands, and potentially lose streaming and other connectivity related features.
