The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Tuesday they have launched an investigation into LG Energy Solution and their electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
The high-voltage EV batteries have been involved in a number of fires, resulting in at least five automakers issuing costly recalls.
According to the NHTSA, the investigation covers 138,024 vehicles, which has the goal to identify and notify other automakers if they have defective batteries in their EVs.
The company said they “will fully cooperate with the inquiry.” (via Reuters)
Among those automakers that have already issued recalls includes General Motors (GM), Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Stellantis, and Volkswagen.
GM’s recall is the most notable of the group, which involves replacing the batteries in over 141,000 Bolt EV and EUVs, and will end up costing LG nearly $2 billion.
