Porsche now owns the world record for vertical distance covered by an electric vehicle (EV).
In September, a team from Porsche AG broke the record in a Taycan Cross Turismo EV.
The world record attempt was months in the making. The team thought outside the box and contacted Eagle Mine in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The active mine is over 3000 feet deep, and its main shaft is drivable by most vehicles.
After some investigation by Eagle Mine officials, they decided it could work with some minor changes to the car. Mainly, the Taycan would need to be raised to its highest possible height during the mine shaft portion.
The driver raised the Porsche Taycan from the driver’s seat to ensure extra clearance in the mine shaft.
Other than that, it was a straightforward and pretty easy drive, according to reporting by The Detroit News.
The Taycan went from Eagle Mine in Michigan across six states until they reached Colorado, finishing their drive with a drive up Pikes Peak in Colorado.
All in all, the journey covered a vertical distance of more than three miles and 1,400 miles between the two points.
The only times the Taycan stopped was to charge, and switch drivers during the 1,400 mile record attempt.
