It is clear to see why wait times for the Tesla Model Y have stretched into early 2022. The popularity of the electric SUV has grown so much since it was released last year it now accounts for nearly 40% of all electric vehicle (EV) registrations in the US.
According to the latest data from Experian, a total of 81,802 Model Ys were registered in the US in the first half of 2021. That is up from the 10,113 that were registered when the Model Y was released mid-way through the same time period last year.
The total number of EVs registered in the US also saw a huge jump, rising from 98,351 in 2020 to 214,111 EVs during the first half of 2021.
That gives EVs a 2.5% overall market share, up from 1.5% a year earlier. The Model Y was at the top of the pack, accounting for 38.2% of all EV registrations in the US.
Tesla’s home of California continues to be the catalyst for most of that growth. More than 37% of all Model Ys registered in the US were in the Golden State. Florida accounted for 8.6%, with Texas (5.5%), New York (5.5%) tied in third place.
Washington State (3.8%) and New Jersey (3.5%) rounded out the top six states for Model Y market share.
Tesla Dominates US EV Registrations
The impressive performance from the Model Y helped Tesla registrations rise 81% overall in 2021, giving them a dominating stranglehold on the US EV marketplace.
The Model 3 was the second most registered EV, tallying 56,755 in the first half of 2021, a more modest 8.4% increase from the year prior.
In a distant third was the Chevrolet Bolt EV with 20,141 registrations. In a respectable fourth place was the new Ford Mustang Mach-E (11,068) followed by the Nissan Leaf (8,253).
