Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric SUV in China in April

Despite some local challenges in April, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric SUV in China based on insurance registrations in the country.

During the 30 day period, a total of 5,520 Model Y buyers registered their electric SUV, according to data compiled by the China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC). The next closest competitor was the Nio, with their ES6 and EC6 vehicles tallying 3,302 and 2,484 registrations in April respectively.

The Model Y’s performance is particularly strong considering the production line at Giga Shanghai was shut down for about two weeks due to supply chain issues.

Another promising detail from the figures is the growth potential for the Model Y. With 11,967 registrations for Tesla, that means the Model Y accounted for 46% of the company’s total registrations after just four months of being on the market.

As production continues to ramp up, Giga Shanghai is expected to manufacture more than 255,000 Model Y’s. If sales for the electric SUV continue to be this strong, it won’t take long for it to become the best selling car for Tesla in China.
