Japan has announced a major reduction in electric vehicle (EV) subsidies starting in January 2027, a move that will increase the cost of Tesla vehicles after generous incentives made them the world’s most affordable.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), subsidies under the Clean Energy Vehicle (CEV) program will be reduced by approximately 40% for vehicles newly registered on or after January 1, 2027.

The decision comes as the government expects its existing subsidy budget to be exhausted before the final application deadline of February 12, 2027.

Rather than allowing the program to run out of funding, METI is lowering incentive amounts to keep subsidies available for as long as possible within the existing budget.

For Tesla buyers, the reductions are substantial. According to the official model-by-model subsidy table, incentives for the Model 3 and Model Y will fall from ¥1,270,000 (C$11,316) to ¥762,000 (C$6,789).

The revised amounts apply to all listed Model 3 and Model Y variants, including the Performance versions and the larger Model Y L.

Meanwhile, subsidies for the Model S and Model X, including Plaid variants, will decline from ¥1,016,000 (C$9,053) to ¥609,000 (C$5,426).

Japan calculates subsidy amounts using a scoring system that evaluates each automaker’s efforts, with the highest standard battery electric vehicle (BEV) incentive dropping from Â¥1,250,000 (C$11,138) to Â¥750,000 (C$6,683).

The reductions follow a period of strong growth for Tesla in Japan, where the automaker recorded nearly 4,000 registrations in June, setting a new monthly sales record.

The subsidy changes also come after Tokyo introduced additional local incentives that helped dramatically reduce the effective purchase prices of Tesla vehicles in the Japanese capital.
