Tesla’s presence in India is starting to gain momentum, several months after the company lowered the entry price of the Model Y and expanded its footprint across the country.

According to figures compiled from India’s government Vahan portal, Tesla India registrations reached a record 294 vehicles in September 2026, more than doubling from the previous month.

The September total was about 2.5 times higher than August, when Tesla recorded 117 registrations. That followed 116 registrations in July, meaning September alone was higher than the previous two months combined.

The latest figures represent a significant change from Tesla’s registration pace since its entrance into India last year. Between September 2025 and June 2026, registrations ranged from just 29 to 69 vehicles per month. That changed in July, when the total jumped to 116 and remained at nearly the same level in August before September’s surge.

The increase coincided with Tesla lowering the Model Y’s entry price in India with the introduction of the new Premium RWD. We previously reported on the Model Y’s stronger performance following the July change.

The Vahan registration figures shared on X by Tesla Club India show 990 Tesla registrations from September 2025 through September 2026. Another 37 had been recorded in October, taking the cumulative total beyond 1,000.

That tally placed Tesla second among luxury EV brands for September, behind BMW India at 502 registrations and ahead of Mercedes-Benz India at 125. Tesla accounted for about 30 percent of India’s luxury EV segment, up from 11 percent a year earlier.
