Tesla Begins Model Y Standard Production at Giga Berlin, But Canadian Launch Still Pending

Tesla has officially begun production of the Model Y Standard at Giga Berlin, marking the debut of its most affordable version of the world’s best-selling electric SUV from the automaker’s German factory.

The milestone was announced today through Tesla’s @gigafactories account, which posted, “Model Y Standard says ‘Hello World’ — Production at Giga Berlin has started today!”

The start of production confirms that Tesla is expanding its Model Y lineup in Europe. The Model Y Standard serves as Tesla’s new entry-level Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant, offering the same minimalist design and technology as higher trims, but with a more accessible price tag and a single-motor setup.

When Will Canada Get the Model Y Standard?

Although the vehicle is not yet on sale in Canada, signs of its impending debut are growing. In mid-October, a camouflaged Model Y Standard was spotted testing on public roads in Richmond, British Columbia, marking the first appearance of the variant in the country. The test unit featured the updated center console and partially covered bumpers — visual cues that confirmed it was the new Standard trim.

Tesla has not officially announced the Model Y Standard for Canada, but the company often conducts local testing before adding new trims to its configurator. Once the necessary regulatory approvals and import logistics are complete, Canada could see the Model Y Standard launch sometime in 2026.

An Affordable Addition to Tesla’s Lineup

The Model Y Standard features a range of around 516 km (321 miles), a top speed of 217 km/h, and a peak charging rate of up to 225 kW. Priced from about $39,990 in the United States, the new trim gives Tesla a stronger foothold in the growing mid-priced EV segment.

Built at Giga Texas as well as Giga Berlin, the variant is more likely to be exported from Germany into Canada than the U.S. That is because Canada currently applies a 25% tariff on U.S.-made EVs, forcing the company to switch to Germany to source Model Y for Canada, and presumably for any eventual Model Y Standard imports as well.
