Elon Musk has announced plans to give every child in the United States one share of SpaceX stock next year, a giveaway that could be worth as much as US$10.5 billion (C$14.9 billion).

The SpaceX CEO revealed the plan in a post on X on Monday morning, saying, “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.”

The announcement comes just months after SpaceX went public on the Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX.

SpaceX also recently reported its first quarterly earnings as a public company, generating US$7.8 billion in revenue and recording a US$541 million net loss.

A multibillion-dollar giveaway

According to the latest filings, Musk owns approximately 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, excluding unvested awards and options.

With roughly 72 million children under 18 in the United States, the giveaway would represent about only 1.5% of those shares. Based on SpaceX’s closing price of US$146.03 on October 16, the total value would be about US$10.5 billion.

However, Musk has not explained how the shares would be distributed or which children would qualify. The announcement specifically covers American children, meaning Canadian children would not be included.

Musk responds to Anthropic’s public benefit fund

The announcement followed Anthropic’s decision to commit an initial 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund, with the potential for additional contributions as its valuation increases.

Musk responded to Anthropic’s announcement by saying, “I recommend giving the shares directly to the public,” before confirming that he intended to do exactly that.

SpaceX is scheduled to release its Q3 2026 earnings on October 20.
