Volvo is recalling 12,627 EX30 and EX30 Cross Country SUVs across North America because their front head restraint cushions could come loose during a crash, increasing the chance of injury.
The Transport Canada recall covers 2,697 vehicles, including the EX30 and EX30 Cross Country models from the 2025 and 2026 model years.
The U.S. recall covers a further 9,930 vehicles, including 8,825 EX30s from model years 2025–2026 and 1,105 EX30 Cross Country SUVs from model year 2026, according to Volvo’s filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The problem involves how the cushions are secured inside the front head restraints. Transport Canada simply says an incorrectly attached cushion could shift or separate during a collision.
Volvo’s U.S. filing provides more detail, explaining that inadequate fastening could allow separation in particularly severe crashes, including those involving very high speeds and impacts from multiple directions.
The investigation began after Volvo learned of a possible cushion attachment issue in September 2025. Working with its supplier, the automaker reviewed the existing design and evaluated ways to strengthen the attachment.
Volvo classified the concern as critical on September 30, 2026, and decided October 7 to prepare a recall.
The repair described in the U.S. documents involves applying a two-part epoxy to three mounting points. Volvo says testing showed the repair improved attachment strength.
Volvo says it has received no reports alleging injuries or deaths linked to the issue.
