Lucid, Nuro, and Uber have revealed the next major step in their robotaxi roadmap, announcing plans to bring their autonomous ride-hailing service to Houston in 2027.
The companies confirmed this week that Houston will become the second market for the partnership’s robotaxi program. However, the service, which will be offered through Uber, isn’t expected to begin offering public rides until mid-2027.
As part of the announcement, Nuro revealed it is already conducting autonomous vehicle testing on public roads in Houston with safety operators behind the wheel. The company says its validation process combines simulation, closed-course testing, and real-world driving, with nearly 100 autonomous vehicles currently operating across California and Texas around the clock.

To support the future fleet, Uber has secured a 50,000 square foot depot facility in Houston, along with a dedicated charging and service location. The sites will serve as the operational hub for the robotaxi fleet, handling charging, maintenance, cleaning, repairs, and other day-to-day requirements needed to keep autonomous vehicles on the road.
The robotaxi service will use the Lucid Gravity SUV, equipped with Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous driving platform. The vehicles feature an extensive sensor suite that includes cameras, radar, lidar, and a roof-mounted sensor array designed to provide redundant perception systems. Future Lucid midsize vehicles are also expected to join the fleet as the program expands.
The partnership was first announced in 2025 when Uber committed to purchasing a minimum of 35,000 autonomous vehicles over time while investing heavily in both Lucid and Nuro. Uber plans to own and operate the vehicles alongside fleet partners, while riders will access the service through the standard Uber app.
According to the companies, San Francisco remains on track to become the first public launch market later this year, and that they ultimately intend to expand to dozens of markets globally.
