Tesla to add remote trailer light test through mobile app

Tesla Model Y towing

Tesla is preparing to roll out a small but highly practical new feature that could make a big difference for owners who tow with their vehicles—especially those doing it solo.

According to new strings discovered in a recent update to Tesla’s mobile app, the company is working on a remote trailer light test for the Model Y, Model X, and Cybertruck, allowing drivers to check their trailer connections directly from their phone.

For anyone who regularly tows with a vehicle, the problem this solves is immediately obvious. Testing trailer lights has traditionally been a two-person job. One person sits in the driver’s seat to activate the brake pedal, turn signals, or hazard lights, while another stands behind the trailer to confirm everything is working correctly. Doing it alone often means multiple trips back and forth—or just hoping everything is connected properly.

Tesla’s new feature appears set to eliminate that hassle entirely. According to details found in the code of the latest app update by Tesla App Updates on X, the string MOBILE_APP_FEATURE_TRAILER_LIGHT_TEST will let owners trigger a diagnostic lighting sequence remotely through the Tesla app.

Instead of jumping in and out of the vehicle, drivers will be able to plug in their trailer, walk to the rear, and cycle through running lights, brake lights, and turn signals with a few taps on their phone.

As with many upcoming Tesla features discovered like this, there’s no official timeline yet for when the remote trailer light test will go live. However, its appearance in the app’s code strongly suggests it is in active development and could be released soon.

Beyond the towing-focused upgrade, the same app update includes references to Tesla Insurance, where the company appears to be streamlining the entire claims and policy experience within its app. Support is also being added for Safety Score V3.0 which lowers insurance premiums the more FSD is used.

Tesla is also adding another quality-of-life improvement, including the ability to remotely manage Dashcam storage—letting owners delete clips or format their USB drive directly from their phone.
