Tesla has quietly secured approval to operate commercial transportation services at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), according to public airport records and permit documentation.
The approval comes after we reported last year that Tesla was seeking airport access for not only SFO, but also San Jose Mineta (SJC), and Oakland International (OAK) airports. With the approval for SFO, Tesla can now compete for one of the most valuable segments of the transportation market—airport trips.
According to data from SFO’s Permitted Ground Transport Companies database reviewed by Drive Tesla, ‘Tesla Inc.’ is listed as an active authorized transportation provider. The entry shows the company holds a limousine permit that became effective on March 20, 2026, and remains in active status.
According to the airport’s description of the dataset, the database serves as a directory of transportation companies authorized to operate at SFO, including taxis, limousines, transportation network companies (TNCs), shuttle operators, and other commercial transportation services.
The listing includes the following details:

- Permit Type: LIMO
- TCP Number: 46782

The database discovery is backed up by a photo showing an official SFO “Authorized Limousine Permit” displayed on a Tesla vehicle spotted by our friends at The Kilowatts. The permit is valid through January 31, 2027, and was issued by the City and County of San Francisco and San Francisco International Airport.

While this is a big milestone for Tesla, it is important to note they are listed under a limousine permit rather than a TNC or autonomous vehicle permit. That suggests the permit is intended for Tesla’s existing ride-hailing transportation service rather than fully driverless Robotaxi operations.

Tesla launched its Bay Area ride-hailing service last year using human drivers, unlike its robotaxi service in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, which operate without a safety operator.
While Tesla has not publicly commented on the permit, the authorization represents an important milestone. Airport access is a critical component of any ride-hailing network. Trips to and from major airports generate consistent demand and are often among the most profitable rides.
