Tesla Robotaxi Usage Surges in Q1 2026 as Paid Miles Nearly Triple

Tesla’s Robotaxi program continued to expand in the first quarter of 2026, with the company reporting a significant increase in real-world usage as it scales its autonomous ride-hailing efforts.

According to Tesla’s shareholder update, paid Robotaxi miles reached 1.7 million (2.73 million km) by the end of Q1, a significant jump from 610,000 miles (981,700 km) at the end of Q4 2025. That represents nearly a tripling of cumulative paid miles, highlighting how quickly the service is gaining traction as Tesla expands its autonomous ride-hailing footprint.

Tesla also noted that paid Robotaxi miles nearly doubled sequentially during the quarter, pointing to accelerating adoption as more riders gain access and operations expand.

Expansion into new cities

Much of that growth is being driven by geographic expansion. During the quarter, Tesla continued to widen its unsupervised driving operations in Austin.

While not in Q1, Tesla took another major step forward, launching unsupervised Robotaxi rides in Dallas and Houston in April. While the fleet in these new cities remains small at just two vehicles each, these expansions mark the first time Tesla has operated its driverless ride-hailing service across multiple major metropolitan areas simultaneously.

The company says it is continuing to lay the groundwork for further growth, including testing and permitting efforts in additional cities including Phoenix, Miami, Orland, Tampa Bay, and Las Vegas, allowing it to scale quickly once approvals are secured.

Cybercab to lead the next phase

While Tesla’s current Robotaxi fleet is made up of Model Y vehicles, that is expected to change in the near future. The company reiterated that its purpose-built autonomous vehicle, the Cybercab, will play a central role in the network going forward.

“Once in production, we expect that Cybercab will begin to replace the existing Model Y fleet and will be the largest volume vehicle in the fleet over time,” Tesla said in its shareholder update.

The shift to a dedicated Robotaxi vehicle is expected to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs, helping Tesla scale the service more aggressively.

Tesla shared a photo in its shareholder deck confirming that Cybercab production has begun, although it is unclear how quickly Cybercab will begin replacing Model Y in the Robotaxi program.
