Tesla is building its own AI-based maps and navigation system rather than continuing to depend on outside map data, with the first pieces set to arrive as part of FSD V15.
The plan was outlined on Tesla’s Q3 2026 earnings call, where the company also reported an FSD attach rate above 75% in North America.
The topic came up through a shareholder question read during the earnings call, which pointed to recurring FSD problems with speed limits, parking and typical routes, and asked why Tesla doesn’t use its own maps built with input from trusted owners.
Tesla VP of AI Ashok Elluswamy agreed. “You’re totally right that we shouldn’t be depending on external people’s maps,” he said. “We are building our own maps, but not the same way as OpenStreetMap.”
“We are building an entirely new architecture with essentially AI-based mapping and navigation,” Elluswamy explained.
Drivers will be able to interact with the new system by voice. “It’s going to be integrated with voice. You can talk to it, ask for different routes,” he said.
Elluswamy added that the system will learn from both individual drivers and the wider Tesla fleet. “It’s going to learn your personalized preferences, plus also the fleet preferences. The collective intelligence of all the cars are going to flow into making the maps and navigation be super cool.”
The rollout will begin with the start and end of trips. “You’ll see the start and end of trips already use this technology pretty soon as part of the V15 release,” Elluswamy said.
“Over the next several months, it’s just going to take over all of the navigation functions, parking, destination handling, and just will know you better than you know yourself in some regard for the driving task.”
Tesla did not give a release date for FSD V15, and it did not say which outside map providers it currently relies on.
