Tesla CEO Elon Musk says the company plans to make the design and software behind the Model S and Model X open source following the end of production for both vehicles earlier this summer.
Musk revealed Tesla the plans on X, showing the company intends to follow the same approach it took with its first production vehicle.
The announcement comes after Tesla ended production of the Model S and Model X earlier this summer, closing out both vehicles with a limited run of Signature Edition models – 250 units of the Model S and 100 units of the Model X.
The two vehicles had been the flagship vehicles of Tesla’s lineup for more than a decade and helped not only establish Tesla as an automaker, but also push the broader automotive industry toward electrification.

Musk did not provide any details on when the files will be released or exactly what they will include. However, based on when Tesla did the same with the original Roadster in 2023, the package will likely include engineering documentation, design files, and software that would allow owners, developers, and enthusiasts to better understand how the vehicles were built.
Tesla has a history of making some of its technology more accessible. In addition to releasing the original Roadster’s design and software, the company famously pledged in 2014 not to enforce its patents against anyone using them in good faith, arguing that accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation was more important than protecting intellectual property.
With production of the Model S and Model X now over, Tesla has already removed the vehicle production lines, taking just 46 days to dismantle and remove them. In its place, the company has already started assembling the production lines for the initial builds of Optimus, the humanoid robot. Eventually, Tesla will built Optimus at a dedicated factory at the Giga Texas complex that is currently under construction.
