Tesla is going all in with Optimus production. The company has revealed how it took out the EV production lines to accommodate humanoid manufacturing at the Fremont factory in less than 50 days.
Tesla is making progress with repurposing its car production facility in California. The Fremont factory, which the automaker took over from Toyota/GM in 2010, will produce Optimus robots. It used to manufacture the Model X and Model S, which Tesla discontinued in 2026.
The transformation can be seen in a video that Tesla shared on X. Heavy-duty machines pull out concrete trenches and clear out robotic equipment. This is followed by ground preparations for new flooring. Tesla completed the decommissioning process in 46 days.

CEO Elon Musk earlier posted a photo of himself and the Optimus team inside the factory.
Tesla is expected to reveal the third-generation Optimus robot before the end of the year. Musk implied that the robot could have been showcased earlier, but for fear of being copied by competitors.
Tesla plans to begin pilot production at the updated Fremont factory in July or August. While the company targets an annual output of one million humanoids, Musk has advised that the production would be slow initially. This is due to the complexity of the production process, which requires about 10,000 parts. Tesla also has to build up a robot supply chain from scratch.
In the meantime, Tesla will deploy the first units in its own factories. However, Musk projects that Optimus will become “the biggest product of all time.” He sees the humanoid finding uses in both industrial and domestic settings.
