Tesla has updated the look of the Design Studio in Canada, bringing changes made to the U.S. configurator several months ago north of the border. However, one part of the update has already caused some confusion, with the newly displayed prices making it appear as though Tesla has cut prices by several thousand dollars.
Earlier this year Tesla updated the Design Studio in the U.S., making it easier to learn more about the vehicles and their features directly on the online configurator. You can now do the same in Canada, with information about the interior, suspension, technology, and more, now just a click away. Full Self-Driving (FSD) is now more prominently displayed as well after the company switched to a subscription-only model.
The changes extend beyond just improved images and information, and also affects vehicle pricing, but not in the way you might hope.
Over the weekend we received several messages from our readers letting us know Tesla has lowered prices for the Model 3 and Model Y by several thousand dollars. However, the company is now by default including estimated gas savings and in the case of the Model Y, the $5,000 EVAP rebate in the displayed price.
As you can see in the screenshots below, the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) is now listed as $34,390*, but that asterisk is important as it includes a reduction of $5,100 for the estimated gas savings over a 3-year period. Uncheck that box, and the price returns to $39,490.
The impact is even larger on the Model Y. The RWD variant has a displayed price of $38,390*, but that includes $11,600 in savings: $6,600 in fuel and $5,000 from EVAP.
This isn’t the first time Tesla has included estimated savings in the prices displayed in its Design Studio, although it has been a while since Canadian shoppers have seen them presented this prominently.
For anyone shopping for a Tesla in Canada, the important number is the price shown after estimated savings are turned off. While fuel savings can certainly lower the overall cost of ownership, they aren’t a discount on the purchase price, and the EVAP rebate is only available to eligible buyers and vehicles.
