Tesla has started delivering the Foundation Series Cybertrucks with the new 20″ Core Wheels with All-Season Tires. As expected, the new wheels provide some extra range, but the amount of efficiency gained by the change is surprising many.
When Tesla unveiled the production specs of the Cybertruck last year, perhaps the most disappointing aspect was the truck’s range. After having originally promised a 500 mile (847km) range, the Cybertruck instead came with 340 miles (547km) for the Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant, and 318 miles (512km) for the Cyberbeast, both with the beefy 35″ All-Terrain tires.
Back in May Tesla started giving customers the option to order their Foundation Series Cybertruck with 35″ All-Season Tires and smaller Core Wheel Covers. Last week the company started delivering trucks in this configuration, and initial range testing shows some impressive efficiency gains.
The CybertruckOwnersClub forum notified us that one of their users, MadMaxTX reported getting as low as 285wh/mile, or 177wh/km on their new Cybertruck with Core Wheels and Pirelli Scorpion All-Season Tires. This is around the same the Model Y is able to achieve, but with the Cybertruck’s 123kWh battery, equates to about 400 miles (643km) of range on a full charge.
This figure was with city driving, and when highway driving was thrown into the mix, the efficiency dropped to a still respectably 304wh/mile (189wh/km), or about 370 miles (595km).
This is still not the range initially promised, but with the optional range extender, that has unfortunately now been delayed until early 2025, you should be able to get more than originally promised 500 miles on a full charge.
While Tesla has started deliveries of the Core Wheels in the US, Canadian customers can’t yet pick this option and will take delivery with the All-Terrain tires. This might not be a bad thing though as All-Terrain tires are typically better in the snow than All-Season tires, as pointed by Cybertruck Lead Engineer Wes Morrill on X.
However, Morrill also revealed that Tesla will soon offer a 3-peak winter tire package for Cybertruck owner’s “looking for the best winter performance.”
