Tesla has shared a new milestone in its Cybertruck program. The EV maker has started fitting the electric pickup trucks with 4680 battery cells made with lithium refined in Texas.
According to a Tesla X post, it has assembled the first Cybertruck powered by 4680 battery cells, based on output from the company’s lithium-refining facility in Texas on the Gulf Coast. This is a change from the company’s dependence on lithium imported from overseas, including China, Australia, and Chile.

Company CEO Elon Musk amplified the achievement by quoting the post with the words, “Lithium made in America.”
Tesla started construction of its refinery in Corpus Christi in May 2023 and has invested more than $1 billion. Operations started in 2024, but the refinery came fully online early in 2026, and production has since ramped up. The facility now sends processed lithium hydroxide to the Austin factory, where it is used to make 4680 cells. The Cybertruck production line is conveniently located within the Austin complex.
The Gulf Coast processing facility uses an alkaline leaching method to refine lithium, thereby reducing emissions by 30 percent. Another advantage of the process is that it slashes reagent costs by 60 percent. Tesla also profits from selling the anhydrite by-product as raw material for the construction industry. Bringing lithium refinery state-side insulates the automaker from the vagaries of the battery cell supply chain, which is notorious for steep price swings and associated geopolitical shenanigans.
Tesla already uses 4680 cells made in-house in the Cybertrucks. However, the latest update means the manufacturing process is now more vertically stacked. Tesla has not revealed plans to put the American-sourced battery packs in other models. The automaker has, however, raised Cybertruck prices in the US.
