Tesla Reveals Cybercab Is 40% More Efficient Than Model Y, Can Produce Drive Unit Every 10 Seconds

Tesla has shared a new look at the manufacturing process behind its Cybercab, revealing some impressive efficiency and production figures for its purpose-built robotaxi.

In a video published by Tesla Recruiting on X, the company highlighted its in-house drive unit engineering and manufacturing capabilities, including a claim that the Cybercab is roughly 40% more efficient than the Model Y.

For a vehicle designed to spend much of its time transporting paying passengers, efficiency is particularly important. Lower energy consumption means reduced operating costs per mile, while also allowing Tesla to use a smaller battery pack without sacrificing as much driving range.

Tesla also revealed just how quickly it can manufacture one of the most important components of its autonomous vehicle.

“The drive unit assembly line is fully automated, and capable of building a drive unit every 10 seconds.”

The video shows Tesla’s automated drive unit production line, offering a glimpse at the manufacturing technology the company is using to increase output while reducing costs.

The 10-second figure applies specifically to the drive unit production line, rather than the assembly of a completed Cybercab. The video is also an advertising pitch, attempting to attract engineers and manufacturing specialists to Tesla’s powertrain team as the company continues expanding its Cybercab program.

Unlike the Model 3 and Model Y, the Cybercab is being built using Tesla’s new “unboxed” manufacturing process, which allows different sections of the vehicle to be assembled simultaneously before coming together later in production.
