Tesla is trying to get its first Cybercabs into the hands of customers by the end of 2026, though CEO Elon Musk says the vast majority will remain Tesla-owned.

The update came during the company’s Q3 2026 earnings call, following its third-quarter results.

Ahead of the call, details around Cybercab was among the top shareholder questions, one of which was, “when will the Cybercab be available for customer purchase/ownership?”

Lars Moravy, Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering responded with a somewhat surprising answer, “… in short, we are trying to get Cybercabs to customers by the end of this year, 2026.”

He added that Tesla will begin with a small number of vehicles: “As we start small this year and we learn about all the things Ashok mentioned about delivery and ownership and fleet management of autonomous vehicles in customer hands, we will continue to scale that.”

Despite the goal to bring them to customers within the next two months, Musk tempered expectations somwhat, saying Cybercab is mainly meant for Tesla’s own ride-hailing service.

“Cybercab is primarily going to be something that is offered as transport as a service. Whereas our other cars would be more the cars that you would want to own, like the 3 and the Y and whatnot, and Roadster, obviously. But the vast majority of the Cybercab stuff will be essentially Tesla-owned and transport as a service,” he said.

Tesla did not share pricing, which customers would be eligible, or what geofence and fleet management requirements would apply.

In a separate answer about owner vehicles, AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said customer Model Ys must be able to fit within Tesla’s geofences and fleet management to operate fully autonomously. “We suspect somewhere around Q2 next year is when we can turn on some of the first customer vehicles to be part of the Robotaxi fleet,” he said.
