Tesla has unveiled another new approach to building Supercharger stations, designed to lower installation costs while also making it easier to deploy charging sites in more challenging parking lot layouts.
Called the Accordion Supercharger, the new design takes Tesla’s push toward factory-built charging stations and adapts it for locations where chargers can’t simply be installed along a curb behind parking spaces.
Tesla Charging revealed the design this week, saying the Accordion Supercharger provides a solution for sites where chargers need to be installed between parking spaces, while cutting installation costs by 20%.
The accompanying video shows the assembled equipment arriving by truck before being lifted into position and expanded across the parking area, much like an accordion. The system includes a central V4 cabinet connected to charging posts positioned on prefabricated bases.

Tesla did not identify where the first Accordion Supercharger was installed, although the footage is clearly from Europe, which is an important point.
That’s because there is one aspect of the design that could make deploying the exact setup in North America more challenging – the conduit. Based solely on the video, the conduit’s flexibility doesn’t resemble typical North American commercial installations that require rigid tubing.
That doesn’t mean the concept couldn’t be adapted, but the changes required could ultimately affect its feasibility in the North American market.
The Accordion follows Tesla’s earlier Folding Unit Supercharger, another factory-preassembled design intended to cut construction costs and deployment times. The company has also been using prefabricated Superchargers for several years, which can be put in place and the station turned on in just 4 days.
