Rivian to add Sand Mode, Pet Mode, and Dashcam through OTA software update

Rivian owners will soon be getting a bundle of new features through a free over-the-air (OTA) software update.

The most interesting addition is Sand Mode, which CEO RJ Scaringe teased with a short video posted to Twitter.

In the video we see a R1S electric SUV drifting through sand in slow motion, and kicking up a lot of sand at the same time. What is clear from the video is that the rear wheels are spinning much faster than the front wheels.

No details were provided on how the feature will work but based on the video it appears new software will automatically adjust the rotation of the wheels to provide optimal traction when playing in the sand.

In a follow-up tweet, Scaringe confirmed that once released the feature will be standard on the R1S and R1T.

Along with Sand Mode, Scaringe also confirmed that Rivian is following in Tesla’s footsteps and will be adding Pet Mode and a dashcam.

Again no details were provided but like Tesla’s Dog Mode the feature will allow owners to keep the vehicles HVAC system running at the perfect temperature to keep your furry friends (not your kids) comfortable.

The dashcam feature will work using the array of cameras on the vehicle currently used for Gear Guard, Rivian’s equivalent of Sentry Mode.
