Rivian Introduces Half Moon Grey Paint to Replace El Cap Granite

Rivian has introduced a new exterior colour called Half Moon Grey across its R1 models while retiring the long-running El Cap Granite at the same time.

The new finish, which made its debut during the recent R2 unveiling, is now making its way to the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, offering buyers a more refined take on one of the most popular automotive colour choices.

At a glance, Half Moon Grey may seem like just another neutral option, but Rivian says the inspiration runs much deeper. The colour draws from the shifting tones of the California coastline, particularly around Half Moon Bay, where fog, sunlight, and ocean reflections constantly reshape the landscape’s appearance. That influence is reflected in a finish designed to evolve depending on lighting conditions.

Compared to the outgoing El Cap Granite, the new shade introduces a noticeable shift in character. Rivian describes it as “less blue” with “more warmth and a finer metallic that is a more natural expression of grey.”

The differences are easier to notice in everyday driving conditions. In direct sunlight, Half Moon Grey appears lighter with some warmer tones, while in lower light or shade it shifts to a darker, more charcoal-like finish. This variation is partly due to the use of finer metallic flakes, which create a more even surface and a less pronounced sparkle compared to some other metallic paints.

Rivian’s design team says that balance was intentional. “We weren’t trying to create a new grey just for the sake of it,” said Sophia Park, Director of Color, Materials, Finish. “We kept coming back to how the coast actually looks… there is always some warmth to it, even when it feels overcast. That is what Half Moon Grey is really all about.”

Beyond aesthetics, the new colour also brings practical benefits. As a mid-tone finish inspired by natural stone, it is better at hiding everyday wear like dust, road salt, and light mud—something many owners will appreciate, especially those using their vehicles for outdoor adventures. The finer metallic composition can also help minimize the appearance of swirl marks over time.

Half Moon Grey now joins LA Silver as one of the grey-toned options available on the R1 lineup, while Esker Silver remains part of the newer R2 palette.
