Rivian expanding with new R&D center in Serbia

While Rivian has yet to begin selling and delivering their electric trucks and SUVs in Europe, the automaker is expanding onto the continent with a new Research and Development (R&D) center in Serbia.

News of the R&D Center was revealed by Serbian prime minister Ana Brnabic, who said on Twitter the new facility will be located in the country’s capital of Belgrade.

“One of the most progressive and innovative companies in the world, the US-based Rivian, announced today that they are opening a R&D centre in Belgrade,” Brnabic said on Twitter (via SeeNews)

According to local media reports the facility will employ up to 200 people and be operated under Rivian’s local subsidiary, Rivian SE Europe, which was formed this past July.

Rivian is wasting no time in looking for those 200 employees as 14 job postings have already appeared on the company’s careers website.

Positions at the Serbian R&D facility include those in Information Technology, Autonomous Driving, Software Engineering, and several HR related positions.

Rivian was originally hoping to begin European sales in early 2022. According to an email sent to a hopeful customer in July of 2021, the company said they would share more details as they got closer to European sales. It is now nearly the end of September and there have been no updates since.

Deliveries in Canada have also not started as the company is still waiting to receive certification from Transport Canada.
