The Michigan State Police is the latest police force to debut an EV in their fleet, with the addition of a Ford Mustang Mach-E GT.
The Mustang Mach-E will be assigned to the Michigan State Police’s State Security Operations section. This section specializes in general law enforcement and security services at state-owned and leased spaces in and around Lansing, Michigan.
Michigan State Police chose the State Security Operations section due to its specific location and the policing services it provides. The unit is focused on state police operations within the city, and the available charging infrastructure and low daily miles make it a great proving ground for the new EV. Ford will also use the testing opportunity as a benchmark for its future planning of a potential purpose-built all-electric police vehicle.
The Michigan State Police have evaluated battery efficiency in patrol vehicles since 2022. However, the police force has only tested hybrids on the road and in police operations. This latest testing of the Mach-E aims to examine the vehicle’s long-term performance and determine whether using an EV can yield any evident cost savings for the department.
Readers will probably recognize the Michigan State Police for their yearly Police Vehicle Evaluation study, which examines new models of police-specific vehicles. The testing unit last tested the Mustang Mach-E in 2024, so it will be interesting to compare those specific testing numbers with the units’ use of a Mach-E for regular policing duties.
