The first conventional hybrid vehicles appeared under Canada’s new import quota for Chinese-built vehicles last week, and now we have a strong indication of which model they are.
As we reported in our latest update on Canada’s China vehicle import quota, Global Affairs Canada data showed 259 non-plug-in hybrid SUVs and passenger vans were imported from China in July. All 259 were listed under a customs classification for vehicles valued above C$35,000.
The government report does not identify manufacturers or individual models, but the timing coincides with the return of the China-built Lincoln Nautilus Hybrid to Canada, making it the most likely vehicle behind the new category.
Lincoln Nautilus Hybrid returns to Canada
Ford Canada has now confirmed that the first 2026 Lincoln Nautilus Hybrids have arrived in Canada and are making their way to dealerships.
The Nautilus is built exclusively in China through the Changan Ford joint venture, and its hybrid powertrain disappeared from the Canadian market after the federal government imposed its 100% tariff on Chinese-made EVs in October 2024.
Ford has not confirmed whether the returning Nautilus Hybrids were imported using Canada’s new quota. However, the timing and government data line up almost perfectly.
The 259 vehicles are classified under HS code 8703409090, covering non-plug-in hybrid SUVs and passenger vans with spark-ignition engines and a customs value above C$35,000. That description matches the Nautilus Hybrid.
Further strengthening the connection, Volvo was the only other automaker importing Chinese-built hybrids into Canada before the tariff was introduced, according to Automotive News Canada. Volvo has reportedly confirmed it has not changed its Canadian sourcing strategy since the new quota took effect.
That leaves Lincoln as the most likely source of all 259 vehicles.
China quota opens the door for Lincoln
The Nautilus Hybrid combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with a 100-kW electric motor, producing 285 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Natural Resources Canada rates it at 7.9L/100 km combined.
The 2026 Nautilus Hybrid starts at just over C$63,000 in Canada.
Its return also highlights an often-overlooked part of Canada’s agreement with China. Despite frequently being referred to as an “EV quota,” the program covers more than battery electric vehicles, with conventional hybrids and plug-in hybrids also eligible.
