BYD reveals the Sea Lion 07 SUV, Tesla Model Y challenger

BYD is one of the big names at the ongoing Guangzhou Auto Show, where it revealed the Sea Lion 07, a mid-size electric SUV coupe. The new EV is considered a direct competitor of the Tesla Model Y.

The Sea Lion 07 will reportedly enter the Chinese market in early 2024, with a starting price between 200,000 and 260,000 yuan ($28,200 and $36,600). In comparison, the Tesla Model Y starts from 263,900 yuan ($37,200) in China. The Kia EV5, while not exactly an SUV coupe, starts cheaper at 159,800 yuan ($22,500).

The Sea Lion 07 is the first in the SUV series within BYD’s Ocean series. The automaker built it off its 3.0 electric platform that integrates the battery into the vehicle body. BYD reportedly already has the Sea Lion 05 and Sea Lion 06 in the works.

Among the features of the Sea Lion 07 is the “DiSus” body control system (developed by BYD), which allows the car to tackle basically any road condition. More details about the mid-sized SUV will emerge closer to the date of availability.

The Guangzhou Auto Show runs from November 17 to November 26. Other big names in attendance are VolkswagenXpeng, and Li Auto.
