Xpeng Launches G6 Ultra Smart Coupe SUV in China, Priced to Challenge Tesla Model Y

Xpeng has officially launched its G6 Ultra Smart Coupe SUV in China. This electric SUV is set to begin deliveries next month and will be priced below its main competitor, the Tesla Model Y

According to Xpeng the G6 will have a starting price of 209,000 yuan (~C$38,000/US$29,000), compared to the entry-level Model Y which starts at 263,900 yuan (~C$48,100/US$36,300). Interestingly, this base price is about 15,000 yuan lower than initially announced during the pre-sales phase. Earlier this month, Xpeng had disclosed a price tag of 225,000 yuan.

The G6 represents a significant milestone for Xpeng as it is the first model to utilize their 800-volt SEPA 2.0 platform, boasting an impressive CLTC-rated range of up to 755 kilometers (469 miles). This electric SUV also offers rapid charging capability. In just ten minutes of charging, it can accumulate 300 kilometers (186 miles) of range.

Borrowing a page out of Tesla’s playbook, the G6 will feature front and rear integrated aluminum body die-casting and CIB battery-body integration technology, the equivalent of Tesla’s gigacasting and structural battery pack on the Model Y. It will also come equipped with Xpeng’s advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which they call XNGP.

While Xpeng has clarified that the G6 name is exclusive to the Chinese market, there are strong indications that the company intends to introduce this electric SUV in other markets as well. However, no official confirmation about an international launch has been provided yet.

“XPENG G6 embodies our unwavering commitment to technology innovation and reaffirms our mission to lead the mobility transformation. We believe that our forward-looking technology roadmap and vision for making innovative technology accessible to the mass market firmly position XPENG as an industry trendsetter and leader in customer satisfaction,” said Mr. He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of XPENG.
