BMW has officially unveiled the all-electric iX5, introducing a new flagship EV that showcases the company’s next-generation battery and charging technology.
Set to arrive in the U.S. in early 2027, the iX5 combines a large 144 kWh battery pack with an 800-volt architecture capable of charging at up to 460 kW, while also bringing bidirectional charging and a standard NACS charge port to BMW’s lineup for the first time.
The headline figure is range. BMW says the iX5 will deliver an EPA-estimated 435 miles (700 km) from its massive 144 kWh battery pack, putting it among the longest-range electric SUVs announced to date.
Charging performance is equally impressive. Thanks to its 800V architecture and support for charging speeds up to 460 kW, the iX5 can recharge from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes under ideal conditions. BMW says owners will be able to add approximately 167 miles (270 km) of driving range in only 10 minutes connected to a fast charger. The SUV will also come standard with a NACS charge port for access to Tesla’s Supercharger network in North America.
Power comes from a dual-motor all-wheel drive system producing 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque, enough to propel the 6,228 lb SUV from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. Despite its performance credentials, the iX5 maintains practical SUV credentials with a towing capacity of up to 6,000 lbs (2,722 kg).
Underpinning the vehicle is BMW’s new sixth-generation cylindrical battery cell technology, which the company says delivers 20% higher energy density compared to its previous battery design while also improving charging efficiency, thermal management, and reducing charging losses.
BMW is also embracing vehicle-to-everything technology with the iX5. The SUV supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functionality, allowing owners to power appliances, provide backup electricity to their homes, or potentially send energy back to the grid when supported by local utilities.
Inside, BMW is introducing its new Panoramic Vision display that stretches across the base of the windshield and incorporates the head-up display directly into the driver’s field of view. A 17.9-inch central display comes standard, while buyers can add an optional 14.6-inch passenger screen. Heated, ventilated, and massaging seats are also available.
On the driver assistance side, BMW continues to focus on Level 2 automation rather than fully autonomous driving. The iX5 features Motorway Assistant for hands-free highway driving between entry and exit points, while City Assistant brings assisted driving capabilities to urban environments. BMW says drivers will still be required to remain attentive and ready to take control at all times.
The iX5 starts at US$81,250 and will begin deliveries in early 2027. Details on Canadian availability and pricing will be announced at a later date.Â
