BMW is adding an electric variant to its redesigned 3 Series lineup, with the new i3 heading to Canada in early 2027. The automaker claims an estimated range of up to 750 km, along with fast charging that can add up to 335 km in just 10 minutes.
The i3 50 xDrive, based on BMW’s new Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform, will be the first version available in Canada. It will start at $74,900, with options adding to that price. It is the only electric version with Canadian pricing announced so far.
This launch variant has two electric motors, all-wheel drive and 463 horsepower, enough to get from zero to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds.
The range figure is not official just yet. BMW’s estimate comes from its own preliminary testing using EPA procedures, rather than a final certified rating. Buyers will have to wait for that number from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to see where the i3 officially lands, although it is already 50km more than their initial estimate earlier this year.
BMW is also promising shorter charging stops. The i3’s 800-volt system supports speeds of up to 400 kW, which the company says can add up to 335 km of range in 10 minutes under ideal conditions.
Owners can also use the car to power electrical devices or provide backup electricity at home with optional equipment. Vehicle-to-load output is rated at up to 3.7 kW.
Inside, a 17.9-inch touchscreen sits alongside a display that projects information across the bottom of the windshield. Available Highway Assist supports hands-free driving on suitable highways at up to 130 km/h, but drivers must keep paying attention.
The Canadian launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. A more powerful i3 M60 xDrive is also due to be unveiled next year, although BMW has not provided its Canadian pricing in this announcement.
