British Columbia has signed on with California, Oregon, Washington and Baja California to plan a zero-emission truck corridor from Vancouver to Mexico. Officials announced the British Columbia to Baja California ZEV Corridor, or BC2BC, on August 26 at the Port of Long Beach.
According to CALSTART’s Drive to Zero program, the first phase is meant to include 20 electric charging stations and three hydrogen stations along the West Coast freight route centred on Interstate 5. The full Vancouver-to-Baja run is about 2,220 km. The corridor sees nearly 10,000 trucks on an average day.
What the five governments signed is a statement of principles on shared technical standards and planning. It is not a construction contract, and the announcement does not name sites, operators, charger output, or a completion date. No public dollar figure was attached, so it is still unclear whether any of those 20 chargers will actually sit in B.C. or only south of the border.
Tesla took part in the Long Beach showcase, with a Semi on display beside trucks from Volvo, ZM Trucks and shipper IMC Logistics. Volvo Group North America, Southern California Edison, EV Realty and King Fio Trucking were also there.
“Freight corridors are where electrification can deliver real operational value at scale,” said Aravind Kailas, Advanced Technology Policy Director at Volvo Group North America.
For fleets in Canada, the B.C. stretch is the West Coast counterpart to Tesla’s early Megacharger talk along Ontario’s Highway 401. Tesla has not said whether any of the BC2BC chargers would be Megachargers.
CalSTA, CALSTART and the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies are coordinating the planning. Next up is a series of technical meetings among the five governments.
