80% of Canadians open to owning an EV: Abacus Data

According to the latest round of data from Abacus Data and Clean Energy Canada, almost 80 per cent of Canadians are open to owning an electric vehicle (EV).

When asked what is your feeling about owning an electric vehicle, respondents indicated:

  • 19 per cent love the idea
  • 31 per cent are interesting in considering one
  • 29 per cent are hesitant but open to it
  • While only 21 per cent probably never will

Furthermore, 63 per cent of Canadians would prefer to see EVs become the majority of the vehicles driven on the road.

In addition, 80 per cent think it is likely that EVs will reach that level of acceptance. However, only half believe that this will happen within the next 15 years.

About one in ten respondents in the survey owned an EV. Of those who own an EV, 93 per cent were happy with their choice of vehicle.

Finally, on the question on support for government using policy measures to encourage more people to switch to EV, 75 per cent of respondents supported this.

The randomized survey of 1,500 Canadians via partner panels was completed by Abacus Data back in late January 2022.
