The Tesla Model Y has reached another major milestone in one of the world’s most EV-friendly markets. According to new data from Norway’s Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), the Model Y has officially become the first electric vehicle ever to surpass 100,000 registrations in the country.
As of May 20, a total of 100,224 Model Ys had been registered in Norway, making the electric crossover one of the most common vehicles on Norwegian roads today.
The achievement is particularly impressive given how quickly it happened. The first Model Y units were registered in Norway in August 2021, meaning Tesla reached the six-figure milestone in less than four years.
That level of adoption means roughly one out of every 29 passenger vehicles in Norway is now a Model Y.
The report also shows how rapidly the Model Y has grown year after year. Tesla registered over 8,200 Model Ys in Norway in 2021, climbing to more than 17,000 in 2022 and over 23,000 in 2023. The strongest year came in 2025, when more than 27,600 new Model Ys were registered.
The milestone also highlights just how far Norway’s transition to electric transportation has progressed. While EVs have become increasingly common around the world, Norway remains in a league of its own, with EVs consistently accounting for 95%+ of new car sales.
OFV CEO Geir Inge Stokke said the Model Y’s success reflects both Tesla’s popularity and the broader shift taking place in Norway’s auto market.
“That a single car model has passed 100,000 new registrations in such a short time is remarkable. The Tesla Model Y has hit the Norwegian market very well, and the figures show how quickly the electric car market has developed in Norway,” said Stokke.
The Model Y’s appeal appears to extend far beyond major urban centres. According to the report, nearly 88% of Model Ys in Norway are privately registered, with owners spread across both large cities and smaller municipalities.
“This is no longer a niche car or a big city phenomenon. The Model Y has become a car that many Norwegians recognize in the traffic scene, whether they live in the largest cities or in smaller municipalities,” Stokke added.
Oslo leads the country in Model Y registrations with more than 16,800 vehicles, followed by Bergen, Bærum, and Trondheim. Together, the five largest municipalities account for roughly 35% of all Model Y registrations in Norway.
