The first half of 2022 has been good for Tesla, and the Tesla Model Y’s sales are strong in Europe.
In fact, for the first time ever, Tesla is atop the European midsize SUV sales as the Model Y passed the Mercedes-Benz GLC.
Although we still have six months of sales, if the current rate continues, the Model Y could overtake the Audi A3 as Europe’s top premium model in 2022.
Production for Tesla in Europe is still a split between Giga Shanghai and Giga Berlin as the company’s new facility ramps up to full capacity.
As per China Passenger Car Association numbers, Tesla China exported 19,756 vehicles in July.
Not all those vehicles made their way to Europe, but a significant amount did.

The sales numbers from Europe come from Salesforce, and the top five vehicles were:
- Tesla Model Y – 41,851
- Mercedes- Benz GLC – 40,554
- BMW X3 – 31,138
- Volvo XC60 – 27,836
- Audi Q5 – 15, 552
Tesla was not the only EV model in the top 10.
The Audi Q4 e-tron came in seventh with 11,182. While the Audi e-tron came in at tenth with 9,470.
With the success of the EVs, electric powertrains are now tied with diesel at 32 per cent of the market share for midsize SUVs.
So, we will see if electric finally takes first in this very popular segment by the end of 2022.
