Tesla has revealed new details about the production version of the Semi, including some impressive acceleration figures and several changes aimed at improving efficiency and simplifying manufacturing.
The information comes thanks to Top Gear, who recently got a behind-the-scenes look at the factory in Nevada. Tesla says the Semi can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 12.5 seconds without a trailer. Even with a fully loaded trailer, the electric Class 8 truck can reach 60 mph in 24 seconds.
For comparison, a conventional diesel semi can take around 60 seconds to reach the same speed when fully loaded.
One of the more interesting details is that Tesla doesn’t actually paint the Semi. Instead, its body panels are powder coated, similar to Tesla’s Megapack energy storage systems. Eliminating a traditional paint shop reduces the amount of factory space required while also lowering production costs. The Semi will initially be offered in white, with additional colours planned for fleet customers.
Tesla has also managed to make the production Semi about 3% more efficient than earlier prototypes. Changes include a new opening in the front bumper to improve airflow and a redesigned, squarer battery pack that retains heat better in cold weather.
The Standard Range Semi uses a 548 kWh battery pack, while Tesla says the truck is only around seven times less efficient than a Model Y despite its substantially larger size and weight. Its aerodynamics also reportedly beat those of the Bugatti Chiron.
Other production changes include a three-piece front bumper that should make repairs easier and cheaper.
Inside, the Semi retains its distinctive centre-mounted driving position. The cloth seats are both heated and ventilated, while the cab has enough headroom for a 6-foot-6 person to stand upright.
With production now underway in Nevada, the latest details provide a clearer picture of how Tesla has refined the Semi for high-volume manufacturing and real-world fleet use.
