The best-selling EV in Germany in 2021 was the Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 was officially the best-selling EV in Germany in 2021.

The title comes as the Model 3 closed out 2021 as the top-selling EV in the country in December.

Overall, the Tesla Model 3 was the 11th best selling vehicle overall, electric or otherwise, in Germany for 2021.

2021 was a banner year for EVs. Overall, EVs share of the German auto market grew to 13.6 per cent. This represents an 83.3 per cent change in year-over-year sales.

In December alone, 6,096 Model 3s were sold in the country, according to data from the KBA motor authority. The VW e-up took second place with 5,343 registrations. The Renault Zoe had 5,571 units sold to round out the top three.

In terms of total sales for EVs in 2021, the Model 3 came in first by a significant margin. Tesla sold 35,262 for the entirety of 2021.

Volkswagen vehicles came in second and third. The e-up! moved 30,797 models while the ID.3 moved 26,693 cars.

However, the most surprising thing about these sales is that 2022 EV numbers should blow them out of the water. One of the principal reasons for this is the introduction of the Tesla Model Y to the market.

Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin will kick off production with the Model Y and should start delivering vehicles to the German market very soon.

So, we shall see if the Model 3 keeps its crown as the best-selling EV in Germany or if the highly anticipated Model Y will take it over.
