Tesla’s Actually Smart Summon may soon be operable within a larger radius in Europe. UNECE has announced it could more than double the feature’s maximum range.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has published a proposed amendment to Regulation No. 79. The update will increase the maximum RCP operating range from 6 to 10 m. In some cases, the limit can extend to 15 m.
According to the proposal, the operating distance can reach 15 m as long as the car remains within the driver’s line of sight. The bump makes Actual Smart Summon significantly more practical, especially in scenarios like shopping mall parking lots.
Tesla customers in North America have always enjoyed the longer range. However, the automaker had to cap the operating distance at 6 m to comply with UNECE requirements when launching Actually Smart Summon in Europe in 2024.
UNECE justifies the update with several rationales. The regulatory body states that at 15 m, the vehicle is still reasonably within sight, satisfying safety requirements. Extending the operating limit also reduces the blind area behind the automobile, while allowing the driver to monitor the manoeuvre from a safe distance.
The regulatory review remains a proposal, and there is no timeline for its implementation. However, Tesla owners in Europe will be reassured that an over-the-air update will enable the extended range, as it is not a hardware issue.
