Tesla has shut down some of its production lines in Austin, Texas and Sparks, Nevada, due to the widespread Microsoft and CrowdStrike outage.
Although not all production lines were shut down, the company did inform some Tesla factory workers at Giga Texas and Giga Nevada they would be heading home during the night shift. While also informing those scheduled to work the day shift on those lines to stay home.
Per Business Insider, Tesla sent an internal memo that noted a Windows Host Outage was causing issues with servers, laptops and manufacturing devices. They did not specify which lines were affected, nor did they go into detail about any downstream issues.
The Microsoft- CrowdStrike outage was caused by an overnight push update from CrowdStrike, which included a fatal bug. When trying to access some parts of internal servers, workers were greeted with a blue screen of death with the message “Microsoft has run into a problem.” The update has caused flight cancellations, banking issues, and widespread IT issues.
CrowdStrike has deployed a fix, but IT professionals will need to manually update servers and devices, which could take some time.
There is no timeline from Tesla on when the affected production lines will re-start. However, we can assume the patch should be up and running over the weekend.
