The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have long been best sellers in California, the state with the highest rate of EV adoption in the US. That dominance, along with sales of the Model S and Model X, have helped make Tesla account for nearly two-thirds of all zero emission vehicle (ZEV) sales in the Golden State so far this year.
Newly released data from the California Energy Commission shows that between January and September a total of 250,846 ZEVs were sold, giving ZEVs an impressive 17.7% market share in California in 2022.
Tesla accounted for the lion’s share of that figure, accumulating 152,835 sales, or 60.9% of the ZEV sales in California in the first nine months of the year.
Breaking it down by ZEV, the Model 3 has been the most popular ZEV in California, accounting for 69,306 of Tesla’s sales.
Close behind was the Model Y (65,355), followed by the Model X (9,214) and the Model S (8,960).
In fact, even the lower sales of the high-end Model X and Model S were enough to put it ahead of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, which has sold 7,512 units in 2022, making it the fifth most popular ZEV in the state.
In sixth place is the Hyundai IONIQ 5 with 6,221 sales.
While the Model Y isn’t the sales leader in California right now, it could be by the end of the year. The strong sales in California will help push it up the global sales chart and should make it the fourth best selling car in the world in 2022.
As we reported yesterday the Model Y is on track to take fourth place, sitting only behind the Honda CR-V, Toyota Corolla and Toyota RAV4.
